First stop at this month’s mini-blog tour is my guest appearance on the blog Literarily Speaking, where the topic is “A Day in the Life of a Middle-Grade Children’s Book Author.”

I realize people often like to know how a writer spends his day, but the point I try to make is how different a real writer’s life is from the fantasy most people have – including writers. After all, we get into this business not just because we like writing or because we love stories, but because we fell in love with the dream of a lifestyle that, on the outside, appeared to convey status and income without having to put up with office politics, self-promotion, or schmoozing (how very naive we were) .

As I say in the post, I have a feeling I’ll be waiting a long time, if not forever, before my life comes anything close to…

“…spending most days alone in a quiet seaside home with a typewriter, cafes and European restaurants close by, frequent elegant parties where I hobnob with intellectual and artistic giants, hundreds flocking to my readings or lectures on writing, a gardener, a maid, a well-stocked wine cellar, and a lifetime cost-of-living grant from a generous foundation or government.”

But I can dream.
